The Battle for Covent Garden

Does anybody 'live' in Covent Garden

The answer is a resounding "Yes!"

Thousands of people live in Covent Garden's 100 acres. But without the passion of those who lived in Covent Garden in the 1970s, Covent Garden as we know it would not even exist.

The Battle for Covent Garden gives a glimpse into how local people fought for their neighbourhood, and won against great odds. The Covent Garden Community Association was formed at that time and we felt that a permanent record was needed for those who have come to Covent Garden since - to live, to visit, or to work. We have added some historical context to show the area’s development.

The exhibition is permanently displayed at the Seven Dials Club at 42 Earlham Street, London WC2H 9LA and is part of a wider project to preserve our important collective memories, which include an oral history, a film and a website. The exhibition also includes many of the posters that were used throughout the campaign.

The exhibition is dedicated to the residents of Covent Garden and our surrounding ‘villages’, past and present, who have worked tirelessly to preserve a wonderful community here in the heart of London. Some battles are won, some lost. We have much to be grateful for, and much to continue to fight for.
